The Controlled Response Institute provides P.O.S.T, S.T.C and DOJ training as well as facilitating guest presenters to train in our state-of-the-art building.
At Controlled Response Institute, we ensure all officers are equipped with the same base-level understanding of their responsibility to the communities they serve, standards to uphold, and education for effective community-oriented policing . To facilitate this training, we employ exceptional training officers from agencies throughout the state of California and current subject matter experts.
With a focus on a “trust through training” model of policing, students may attend a wide array of courses.

We are committed to developing new and experienced officers to high standards and providing exceptional training to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively protect the life, liberty and property of the people they serve.

*California State does not allow for self-sponsorship for civilians to attend our trainings. All students must first be hired by a California law enforcement agency who will submit TRAINING managerial registrations on their behalf.

OVERVIEW
This course is designed to provide the student with a historical foundation and current activity of Kern County criminal street gangs and their affiliates.
GOAL
This eight-hour course is designed to provide students with in-depth information about current Hispanic, White, Black and female street gangs active in Kern County. Instruction will include on-going patterns of criminal activity, gang identification & recognition and methods of documentation.
Students will learn how to develop gang expertise in courtroom testimony, and how to develop and establish reliable confidential informants desired in criminal gang investigations.

Charles J. Sherman, Owner/Instructor Controlled Response Institute
Charles Sherman is a retired sworn law enforcement officer with approximately 30 years of service. He started his career as a Detention Officer with the Kern County Sheriff’s Department where he served for approximately 10 years. Mr. Sherman was later hired as a full-time Police Officer with the Bakersfield Police Department, promoting to Sergeant and serving for approximately 17 years. In 2019, Mr. Sherman was hired by the Kern County District Attorney’s Office as an Investigator where he served until 2022. Mr. Sherman has developed his professional skill set to include Use of Force Expert, Gang and Narcotics Expert, Koga and PIDT Defense Tactics, Arrest & Control Instructor and Taser, CRCH & Baton Instructor. He is dedicated to developing and presenting strategic communications and use of force training to law enforcement personnel. His personal mission as a business owner and instructor is to build trust in the community through training and developing professional law enforcement personnel who make reasonable use of force decisions.

OVERVIEW
This course is designed to provide both new and experienced peace officers with an update of report writing issues based on both social and legal developments. It will provide enhanced skills for follow-up investigative reports related to criminal and civil matters.
GOAL
Officers attending this course will learn how to refresh their report writing skills and techniques needed to prepare a thoroughly written report. Attendees will combine experience and learned techniques to skillfully write reports, with an emphasis on taking statements and effective documentation. Course discussion will include methodologies of documentation for major crime scenes, use of force incidents, traffic contacts, court room testimony and court room preparation.
The course will also provide updated legislative content regarding PC835(a).

OVERVIEW:
This Correctional Officer Core course is designed to meet and exceed the STC requirements for entry-level adult corrections officers and probation officers. This course will include various legal issues dealing with incarcerated offenders as well as supervision of inmates. Transportation, report writing, receiving and release, accountability contraband training, cell searching and cell extractions.
GOAL:
The goal of CORE training is to provide 200 hours of required entry-level basic training for Adult Correctional Officers and Probation Officers within the first year of employment to entry-level corrections positions. CORE training is based on the tasks that each employee in the respective entry-level position must perform. CORE tasks are identified through job analysis research conducted by STC. These analyses are periodically updated due to the evolving nature of the local corrections professions. Each CORE course has specific content and a minimum number of instructional hours. The CORE courses for ACO and PO also include prescribed classes, performance objectives, training notes and testing requirements to measure learning.
INSTRUCTORS:
Instructors at Controlled Response Institute are certified STC and POST instructors. The instructor team includes both dedicated active and retired sworn law enforcement professionals, each with 30 years of experience and expertise. All CRI instructors are dedicated to providing quality confidence building instruction to their students, through both facilitated and scenario-based training.

OVERVIEW
Students will be instructed in Arrest and Control Techniques designed to ensure personnel safety and awareness while executing their duties as Law Enforcement Officers. Students will be taught about Use of Force legal issues per PC 835a, including the authority to arrest and/or use force. Students will learn key issues related to CA Assembly Bill 392, Senate Bill 230 and Assembly Bill 490. Course is P.O.S.T certified #1428-29503-22 and meets P.O.S.T PSP requirements.
GOAL
This eight-hour course is designed to meet P.O.S.T Perishable Skills Program requirements. Students will be instructed in a facilitated learning environment was well as scenario-based training. Students will learn current legal issues, discuss agency policy, learn proper search, handcuffing and escorting techniques, medical aid requirements and proper use of force report writing.

Legal standards, policies and case law will be covered followed by multiple scenarios with the final exam consisting of proper documentation in a use of force incident.

This 24-hour course teaches students how to take classroom learning and apply it to realistic use of force situations. This enhanced level of training teaches students competency while instilling confidence through making better critical decisions in rapidly unfolding and tense situations.
